I want to share with you my planning for my next big adventure in Colombia. Hidden in the Colombian rainforest south and a little bit east of Bogota in the department of Guaviare are a form of hieroglyphic called pictography. These pictographs are said to be between 11,800 and 12,600 years ago

To visit this remote and under-developed region of the country, one can fly by small plane into the town, or pueblo, of San Jose del Guaviare. I have found a small regional airline called Satena. Satena is predominantly a cargo carrier but has periodic passenger flights into this area. Flights from Bogota take about 1 hour and 15 minutes at a cost between 157,000 and 279,000 pesos which is equivalent to $42 to $75 each way per person depending on options.

Additionally, I have researched potential accommodations for staying in San Jose del Guaviare. My plan is to overnight in the small town while making multiple guided day trips into the depths of the rainforest. The hotel I like best is the Hotel Quinto Nivel. They have a Deluxe Suite that is about 323 square feet with a King bed for around $70 per night, double occupancy and includes breakfast.

As I said the main reason to visit this region is to explore the ancient pictograph murals painted on the rock formations from about 12,000 years ago. Using San Jose del Guaviare as our base camp we must find locals to transport us to these murals. Transportation can take many forms.

I have read that flooding during the rains, these roads are only accessible by jeep and motocross bikes. And the rivers can only be navigated by dugout canoes with small, mounted gas motors. In May, the winter rainy season begins, and the rivers can rise 15-20 feet

Just 11 miles south of San Jose – a plateau rises from the jungle. It’s a landscape of rock formations known as the City of Stones. The rocks and caves form pathways resembling ancient streets.

The historical value of these paintings is immense, and the red pigment of the murals is magnificent. . In this area there are about 4,000 pictographs. It is a wonderful adventure to explore this art of the Carijonas Indians as they describe their history, myths and culture through these incredible and ancient murals.
