My 5 Favorite Restaurants in Austin Texas

my-favorite-restaurants-austin-texas-sign

In November I’m making a trip to Texas for a family event and I’m going to take this opportunity to review my 5 favorite restaurants in Austin Texas.

Austin Texas has long been known as a mecca for foodies and upstart restaurants. The diversity of the area and a culture of experimentation leads to incredible creativity and melding of unparalleled tastes.

A number of these restaurants have expanded regionally or into franchised chains but going back to the original cannot be more exciting. Some are uniquely local and one of a kind.

So where do I start Tex-Mex, Cajun, barbecue, soul food, traditional Mexican, Puerto Rican, country diner, Chinese. There are more styles than I can list. So here we go.

Austin, Texas USA – 04.16.2021: The Famous Terry Black’s Barbecue Restaurant in Austin, TX.

When I arrive in Austin, I make it a point to beeline directly to Terry Black’s barbecue on Barton Springs Road. The awesome smell and taste while sitting on the patio taking in the view of Austin is indescribable. I was told that brisket in the Texas Hill country is king, and Terry Black’s made me fall in love with brisket.

Hidden in a residential neighborhood in a small, difficult-to-find strip center is the Crawfish Shack and Oyster Bar. During the day it is understated and quiet, but well worth the search. They serve tasty Cajun spiced crawfish and shrimp with corn on the cob and potatoes. Just talking about it makes my mouth water

Matt’s El Rancho was found in 1952 by Matt Martinez and his family. They are one of the pioneers to bring Tex-Mex to Austin. Now located on South Lamar they continue to deliver traditional Mexican food and fabulous Tex-Mex along with yummy margarita or two. Definitely a place where the depth of Austin’s food history continues to shine.

Chago’s Caribbean Cuisine was my first introduction to Puerto Rican cooking. The restaurant is informal with a wide variety of homestyle Puerto Rican dishes. You must try the mofongo. When visiting Austin, make Chago’s a part of your family you won’t be disappointed.

Austin, Texas USA – 04.16.2021: Outdoor view of Torchy’s Tacos tex mex restaurant in Austin, TX.

Torchy’s Tacos may seem like a trendy choice but there is a reason they have become one of the more popular street taco franchises. Their food is spectacular. Not only do they promote a taco the month, which is worth a try, but their Trailer Park Taco served Trashy is oh so good
