Just south of Medellín, Sabaneta has a personality all its own. Today it is part of the bustling Valle de Aburrá metropolitan area, but spend a little time around Parque Principal Simón Bolívar and you’ll quickly discover that Sabaneta still feels like a traditional Colombian town where people gather, talk, eat, celebrate and simply enjoy being together.
Sabaneta’s roots go back much further than its modern cityscape. Indigenous people inhabited the area before Spanish families settled there in the 18th century. For generations, the community was associated with agriculture and rural life before becoming a corregimiento of Envigado. The railroad arrived in 1911, helping transform the local economy, and Sabaneta officially became its own municipality on January 1, 1968.
And then there’s the park. Built in 1943, Parque Principal Simón Bolívar has long been the civic and social heart of Sabaneta. It’s shaded by trees and surrounded by the sounds and activity of downtown. Sitting right alongside it is Santa Ana, whose connection with devotion to María Auxiliadora helped make Sabaneta an important pilgrimage destination.
One of the park’s most unusual sights is Bolívar Civil, a monumental marble sculpture portraying Simón Bolívar not as a military hero, but as a civilian and statesman. It is a fascinating reminder that Sabaneta’s public spaces aren’t just places to pass through—they tell stories about the community’s identity and values.
But perhaps the best way to understand Sabaneta is simply to sit in the park and watch life happen. Grab a coffee, listen to the conversations, watch families and friends come and go, and take in that wonderful Colombian rhythm where the plaza becomes an extension of the living room.
Sabaneta has grown enormously, but it hasn’t completely lost that small-town soul. And that’s what makes it such an interesting Curious Perro destination.
Sometimes you don’t have to go far from a major city to find a completely different feel.
